Day 203 / My Table Begins & Jenny’s Table Finishes

I spent the night in June’s room last night because the poor girl could only breath through her mouth and she was making all kinds of strange noises.  Enough to make me worry.

She was feeling better this morning though and went to bed quite well tonight.

Todays creative thing involved beginning actual work on the table top for my Harmonograph.  A Harmonograph is a sort of drawing machine.  Using swinging pendulums geometric patterns are drawn out on a drawing surface.  Check out this short video to see an example of it in action.  For my Harmonograph the drawing surface will actually be a rotating record player.

Today my dad and I stopped by a lumber yard and picked up some plywood as well as some hardwood for the legs.  We cut the table legs 1&3/4 in. square and 37 inches long from the slab of hardwood.  We then cut the table top to be 38 inches square from the plywood.  Finally, we cut six strips of 1&1/2 inch by 38 inch from the plywood to be used as edging.

This project is a little intimidating for me because I have certain goals in the design of this table as well as minimal woodworking experience.  I want the table to be able to fold in half for storing but also be sturdy enough to handle about 30lbs of weight.

I plan on adding the 1&1/2inch edging around each of the table-top halves in order to strengthen it at the hinge.  Hopefully, tomorrow I will be able to assemble some of it and actually see if it will be strong enough to handle the weight.  Cross your fingers!

In other news Jenny finished her own table project today.  The tiled table you can see above.  We picked up the table legs from Urban Ore when we were up in Northern California.  It has been a sometimes tedious project for her that has been both fun and frustrating.  But she persevered and today she was able to finally apply the sealer to the grout.  I think it turned out super awesome and its going to make for a perfect little intimate sitting area under a tree in our backyard.
