Busy Saturday today. I’m attempting to post this in the only hour I have between June’s dinner and the arrival of my mom for babysitting duties. We have a housewarming party to go to tonight.
Last nights creative thing had to extend a little into this morning because I realized that I was missing the right sized drill bit to mount my new motor to the record player I picked up on Day 192. Ultimately, this record player will be the drawing surface to the Harmonograph that I am building. To learn more check out my post from yesterday. This project will probably be more of a long term one because of the the time constraints with work and family (working this Sunday again). Also, the Harmonograph table is quite large and I want to be able to design it so that it can fold up and be tucked away when I’m not using it.
Yesterday, I picked up a variable power supply from a model-train hobby shop and a small DC motor meant for an RC airplane at another nearby hobby shop. I stripped the record player of all the unneeded gears and parts and then began surmising a way to mount the new motor to the record player. I had to hacksaw the screw at the end of the gear on the new motor and then I fixed a series of washers to it in order to make contact with the rubber gear in the record player that drives the spin.
All in all it works pretty well except the motor is, for some reason, petering out after a certain amount of time. Not sure why that is and will have to stop by my local electronic shop to pick some brains there. I think perhaps my motor is not made to run in reverse and I may have messed something up by experimenting with reverse function on my power supply.
Either way It feels pretty good to know that the new motor idea works for the most part.
