Drawing042Steelworker

Just as Jenny was off to bed we talked about what I should draw.  For some reason I had the urge to draw some 1940’s factory worker.  I figured I could find a good body position like a guy putting all his weight into turning a gasket with a wrench or something.  I google image searched “factory worker” and then I tried “Steel Worker” and that’s when I came across this image.  This image is taken from a 1943 cover of Life Magazine with an article on women steel workers.

What I liked about the image was the hard shadows.  As I was drawing, it occurred to me that I would not do this image any justice unless I went ahead and tried inking it.  So, that’s what I did.  I tried to plan out the location of the shadows as much as possible before bringing out the ink.
