This evening I wasn’t sure what I was going to do but I knew I didn’t want to do anything too complex. As I was putting my daughter to bed I thought of a friend of mine, Jonathan St. Amant. He is a teacher and an artist and he is really quite skilled. His creativity is boundless. I’m super envious of his cartooning abilities. Most of his artwork takes place in a fictitious world of his own creation. He has a series of pieces which take place in a world called Nowhereland. It’s a place inhabited by ninjas, uber-masculine robots called Bro-bots, giant sloth creatures and sexy faun women. His latest imaginary world is called “Shelby and the Blooms”. Shelby is a slug who when she recedes into her shell enters into a fantastical world.
Anyways, because he is a teacher, he has a bunch of youtube videos that he does to help inspire his kids. One of them is this watercolor experiment that I did this evening. The rules are, first, you make a grouping of random blobs on a page with watercolor paint. Once the paint is dried you label each of the blobs some kind of category or object. Then, you take a pen and try to draw each of those objects attempting to stay within the random blob of watercolor paint.
To make it extra challenging, I had my wife Jenny come up with all the labels without looking. She came up with some pretty unique things. The Aeonium was a lucky break. That one just happened to fit the blob it ended up on. The toughest one was the Dune Buggy. I also forgot that I was left-handed and accidentally smudged up my banana slug. Oh well.
Check out Jonathan’s video below.
