Day 150 / Horizontal Slit-Scan

As it turns out I may be making a music video for my friends band in the future and I plan on using the slit-scan technique.

If you’ve never heard of slit-scan here’s a brief description: In each of the images above you are seeing 27 seconds worth of time.  Each image is made up of 640 vertical slices going horizontally across.  Each slice, going right to left, is each consecutive frame of video from 0 to 640.

For a more detailed description of how slitscan works check out my original post from Day 100.

As for the results, I have to say, I really love the way the horizontal slitscans look.  I used some shots I filmed a while back at the beach where I kept the camera in a locked position for a long period of time.  I love what it did to the water and the waves crashing onto shore.  It still looks quite normal but you know there’s something just a bit off about it.  I also took the shots I tested on Day 112 and sent them through this method as well.  The footage of the inflatable donkey on the lazy susan which worked beautifully with the vertical slitscan is almost too hard to describe with this new technique.  A funny example is how it treated my footage from Day 94 / Zen Street.  It’s a locked off shot of cars passing by the camera.  Since in the original shot the cars passed by in a matter of seconds, once sent through the horizontal slitscan technique, they turned into very thin (maybe 24 slices) versions of themselves each taking 27 seconds to pass by.  Pretty weird.

I have finally made this project available for download.  It was created in After Effects CS3.  I cleaned it up a bit and added a ReadMe file to help you treat your own video footage with these techniques.  I fixed the issue you might have found with the vertical comp so if you’ve previously downloaded it please re-download it again. You can download it from here.

The video below is a couple minutes long and it shows you how each of the images above turned out in video form.  I’m pretty happy with the results.  I’m looking forward to testing out different kinds of footage.  While your watching try to remember that the left side of the frame is 27 seconds later than the right side.  I hope you enjoy!

On another note:  Due to popular demand, I have finally set-up my email for this site and added it to my About page.  So, if you’d like to contact me for any reason or to request a creative thing, please feel free.  I am always on the lookout for new and different things to do.

Secondly, I have also added a link to my Facebook page so if you enjoy the blog and are on Facebook be sure to visit my page and press “Like”

Thanks everyone!
