This weekend was Wondercon at the Anaheim Convention center. Wondercon is an annual comic book, fantasy and science fiction convention. My friends Wendy and Nicole were there all weekend selling their artwork. I got to see some of their pictures that they posted on Facebook. I saw that Wendy had sold a painting of a velociraptor and it got me thinking…about velociraptors. So, I was inspired to make my own velociraptor painting. After pondering it for a while I decided to fashion my design after some kind of turn-of-the-century hunting photograph. Also, kind of like something out of the farside comic.
I decided to plan it out. I drew it out roughly first, just to help me figure out the composition and anatomy. And then I transitioned over to my nicer paper and attempted to draw the real thing. I think I realized halfway through that I’m composing the image incorrectly and that the velociraptor belongs in the center of the image rather than off to the left side. So tomorrow I may try drawing this all over again and then hopefully I will have enough time to give it an inking and a clean-up in order to prep for watercolor.
