I had to take a break from the charcoal for a minute. It has been good but I needed a break. Tonight, I decided to do a little graphite, 2H to be exact. This is a picture of the two most important ladies in my life from about 2 years ago while at Disneyland. I believe we are standing in line for “Small World”. The proportions are not perfect but it was good to be drawing nice sharp lines with graphite and I was keeping it a bit loose.
On a side note, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my artistic direction for this year-long project. I have been doing a lot of charcoal lately and that’s not because I particularly like charcoal that much as a medium. I mean, I do like charcoal but I’m practicing it more to get a handle on the technique for my own good. I actually think that I’m more interested in pen and ink illustrations than I am in charcoal. And actually, I’m really interested in mixing mediums. In the future, I want to draw more things from my imagination rather than from a photo. Or I want to meld my photo reference into something maybe more abstract or surreal.
I don’t know why I’m really even writing all this stuff because I really don’t know where I’m going with it but I guess I am feeling kind of excited about what may be on the horizon for me artistically. I’m looking forward to finding my voice as an artist. I may have to begin spending multiple days on a single picture in order to give the drawing the time it deserves to come together.
