I’m pretty surprised by my drawing this evening. I never expected this would be the drawing for tonight. I invited some friends over to watch “Samsara” in my backyard again. My friends Jeff and Wendy couldn’t make it over the last time I showed the film in the backyard so tonight I decided to screen it again. It’s a movie that I can imagine is less effective when watched on a regular sized television set. The size amplifies the impact of the film in my opinion.
If you’ve never heard of the film, it’s a 70mm extravaganza in human culture. The film makes interesting connections between various world cultures, like cutting from an African tribe (that you just can’t believe is actually real) to Los Angeles, where a tatted-up gang member rocks his baby in a loving gesture, reminding you of the fact that we are just as weird to them as they are to us.
It seems that especially Western Culture is the most divided when it comes to the subject of TYPE. Culture has truly become SUB-culture in western society. The epitome example of this in the film, in my opinion, is a shot where you see three asian gentleman sporting pompadours that would make Elvis Presley himself cry himself to sleep.
These guys are a part of a culture so SPECIFIC that very few could possibly understand the style. So for tonights drawing, I google-image-searched the words “Asian Elvis” and sifted through the images that came up. I decided to draw a composite image based on the photos I was seeing.
