Day 308 / Clustering

January 8th, 2011

Woke up early to make it to set on time.  Today was the first of three major press days on the movie.  As an EPK guy, I normally don’t have to deal with the press side of things but on this film it’s a little different.  Being that it’s the muppets the filmmakers don’t want the press to bring their own cameras onto set and have the ability to capture the puppeteers below.  The muppets are real people and they are making a movie.  There is no puppet.

So the day was quite busy.  I had two crews on set.  One for b-roll of the scene and one devoted to talent interviews for the press.  There was a lot of running around.  It felt good to be busy.

At the end of the night I had a really wonderful realization.  I was relaxing on set.  In front of me were 20 to 30 muppets all performing a choreographed dance number.  It was a sight to see.  On the top layer you could see all of the muppets dancing tightly to the music and just below you could see all the puppeteers laughing and smiling and working hard to get the timing right.  I once again realized, as I sometimes do, that I’m the luckiest guy in the world.

Ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to be in the movie industry.  I may not be a full fledged filmmaker yet but here I am watching the next great muppet movie being created right in front of me.  If I could travel back in time and tell the young me what the older me is up to in the future the young me wouldn’t believe it.

Anyways, enough reflection.  On my drive home I was thinking about short film ideas and I remembered one that made me crack up with laughter at a Halloween party this year.  My buddy Matt was dressed up as Edward Scissorhands but everyone kept asking him who he was because for some reason people don’t look down that often.  Once you saw the scissors you were like “Oh, of course.” but without them he just looked like some kind of weirdo.

Who is Edward Scissorhands without the scissors?  The words Edward Fingerhands slowly formed in my brain.  The thought of it had me keeled over in laughter.

Very quickly I thought of the circumstances.  Time has passed.  Technology has given Ed a chance to live a normal life with normal hands.  Except now that he has hands his life is less magical.  The image of Edward woefully trimming the hedges with a pair of trimming shears and a pair of hands makes me smile.

So I decided to do a bit of brainstorming on it.  I made this cluster of ideas.

The funny conclusion to this story was that while in the brainstorming process I decided to look up Edward Fingerhands on the internet and sure enough the idea was out there.  I suppose it’s not such a stretch when you think about it.  Nevertheless, the idea still makes me laugh.

Although mine is different, here is my favorite of the other Edward Fingerhands out there.
