Day 277 / Presentation Night

This evening I presented my blog to a group of people at Crashspace in L.A.  It was a pretty nerve-racking day leading up to the presentation.  I asked if I could show up an hour early to get set-up.  I was bringing my harmonograph table and having never transported it I had no idea how long it would take to set-up.

At the last minute, I realized that I didn’t have any good pens.   I rushed to Aaron Brothers and picked up a few micron pens.  The freeways were abhorrent and so I decided to cut through the city.  I imagine I made up some time sticking to the streets but by the time I arrived I only had fifteen minutes left.  I don’t think I began until about 8:30.

There wasn’t a bunch of people there.  5 total actually, and I remember all of their names.  Jason, Rachel, Kevin, Marco and Eddie.  They were all very kind as I flubbed around trying to get set-up.

One aspect of the show that I thought was pretty cool was that I used my wireless salad bowl speakers for sound.  It was funny because I just handed them out and we placed them in random spots in the room.

Eventually, I had it all set-up and I was ready to go.  “Ahem!  Hi there…”.  By the time I got to day 30 Kevin raised his hand and asked, “Uh, are you going to go through every single day?”

Whoops.  Forgot to mention that.  No.  I had planned on prefacing the presentation with the comment that I had wanted to include every single day in the first month because the first month was a testing ground for me.  It was the time for me to experience this and decide whether or not I thought I could continue doing this for an entire year.

It was an interesting experience to go through the whole blog like that.  You could very easily tell what types of creative things were my fallbacks.  My fallbacks are modular patches, music box tunes, Cinema 4D experiments and sometimes origami.  If I’m unsure and I don’t know what to do, I tend to lean towards one of these projects.

By the time I reached day 100 or so things were moving along pretty well and I felt like I was perhaps saying an interesting thing here or there.

At the end I was happy to hear many questions from everybody.  We set-up the Harmonograph table and made a bunch of drawings with it.  I also brought along my music box tunes for people to crank through and my DIY viewmaster disc as well.

I realized that I probably should have let everyone play with these things before or during the presentation because you could see the atmosphere change once people were allowed to touch and play with the stuff I brought

Anyways, I had a great time and felt very special to be invited (thanks Kevin!).  It was a pleasure to meet everyone there and I hope to see them all again soon.

Thanks!

Hi, I’m really enjoying your blog. I just found it a few days ago. For some reason my RSS reader downloaded your last 3 posts today, so I’m kinda bummed that I found out too late that you spoke at crashspace. I’m in orange county and have been wanting to check out chrashspace for a while.

    Thanks guys!

@Mark – sorry about that. The reason you received three posts at once was probably because I posted them all at the same time. Sometimes (especially weekends) I have the tendency to post a couple of posts at the same time. Many times my creative project keeps me up until very late at night and I can’t get to posting it until the next day. Sometimes that happens multiple times and I post multiple days at once.

I also should’ve advertised the Crashspace talk much earlier but there was a point where I thought my work was going to conflict with it so I didn’t want to say anything to soon.

Either way thanks for the comment!

@Marco – It was great meeting you. Haha!
