Day 191 / Music Box Melody-Maker

I think working overnight sunday night may have compromised my immune system because I am not feeling well today.

Last night I got to go home a little early so it was nice to see June before she went off to bed.  I wanted to do something new for my creative thing and I have a lot of ideas stored in my head but none of them were ones that I had any energy for.  It seems like I tend to lean towards the music box when I’m listless.  It’s a good thing because the process of punching out the holes can be a very relaxing and meditative process.  It keeps my brain awake and aware but never frustrates or confuses me.

I decided to do a similar method to my Day 110 song where I used a monome application to work out the composition.  The application I used is called Tintinnabulome and it was developed by a fellow named Mathew Davidson, otherwise known as Stretta on the net.  I still think that hands down this application is one of the most powerful compositional tools.  It creates arpeggios but you can slow them down quite a bit to create basslines or melodic structures to base your solo work on.  When it comes to composing for music box there is no other choice.

Stretta has recently made the decision to leave the internet in order to focus more on his life and family.  I wish only the best for him.  The composition which you can play in the video below would have never existed if it weren’t for him.  Thanks, Stretta!

That is one of your prettiest compositions ever. We need to turn that into a full song. I can hear a whole bunch of other parts for that tune.

Beautiful!!!! Couldn’t agree more with the above post

  3. […] has also found his own bit of inspiration out of the pages here.  Since he saw some of my previous music-box posts he decided to get one of his own.  He composed a song for his wife on their wedding anniversary […]

That’s beautiful. Where did you get the music box player? Where could I get one?

Hi Mark, I got mine from the good folks at Grand illusions. I definitely recommend them because they were very kind to me. Here is a link: http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Large_Music_Box_Set.html#a96
