Day 223 / A Simple Jam Night

This evening I had a simple jam night with Jeff.  I also tested out a Monome App in progress called Loopy.  The developer, a man named Bongo, has been making adjustments to the apps live looping functionality and I was lucky enough to test it out.  Unfortunately, I ran into a couple obstacles in the app that changed our plans for the night and turned us towards a simple, mellow night of jamming.

I must confess that I feel like the blog has been weighing on me lately.  I have this deep urge to always one up myself from the previous creative thing but I have to realize that it’s not possible all the time.  I have to fail.  Creativity is about trying.  It doesn’t have to be a success every night.  I just have to try.  I was reminded of this by Jenny this evening.  She gave me a little pep talk.

It’s an interesting thing that the existence of an audience pushes me to entertain.  It’s completely normal.  A natural reaction.  But I think that I need to learn to keep it at bay every once in a while.

I also think that perhaps the Harmonograph table is weighing on me a bit as well.  I’m looking forward to finishing it and letting it pass behind me.  I feel like once it’s finished I will feel released and free again.  It can be tough to do long-term projects and  I’m a little worried about how the drawings will turn out with the spinning of the record.  Heck, I’m concerned the record will even spin with the pen scraping across it.

Anyways, tonight was about letting go, I think.  Enjoying myself.  No audio to arrange.  No editing to finish.

Just playing.

After we couldn’t get the live looping to work in Loopy, I opened up Ableton Live and Jeff played the Omnichord while I strummed along with the guitar.  It was nice to simply practice guitar.  An example I have used a few times before of exactly the type of thing I cannot do for this blog.

Creating a blog is creative in itself and you’ve done 223 consecutive ones! Hats off to you and keep it going!

    Nice photo mosaic!

I can tell you from experience, it feels way worse to completely drop the ball than it does to just post something “sub-par” to your creative standard for yourself. Keep it up man I love reading what you write, and seeing what you’re working on! My one year anniversary of abstinence from alcohol is coming up soon and I am planning to start another thing-a-day blog at that point. It will be minus Megan, and probably a new URL. We’ll see how it goes… It’s something that I really want to do. Anyways, keep it up! You’re almost there!

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I won’t be throwing in the towel or anything. I just have to remember not to take it too seriously.

Jamming with Jeff is creative and probably rejuvenating too.
