Posting a little late again because I’m cutting a time sensitive project at work at the moment.
I barely fit this one in last night. I spent the day with Jenny and June. As it turns out June has picked up my sickness. Jenny and I went to our friends Colleen and Dave’s housewarming party and got back around midnight.
I thought it would be a fairly simple project drawing up the plans for the Harmonograph, instead it turned out much harder than I expected. I started working within Cinema 4D and it quickly got too complicated so I turned to the graph paper and pencil. What started as blueprints quickly turned into a cluster of ideas.
Unfortunately, without being able to walk through The Home Depot, I can’t very well think up the best way to assemble it. I want the legs to be detachable and for the table to fold-up so I can store it and it won’t take up half the garage.
I’m concerned that the record player will be too heavy for the 3/4in. wooden dowel so I think I will be using either an anodized aluminum pool pole or a galvanized steel pipe. The steel pipe is probably heavier than need be but it comes threaded which is helpful for attaching the record player. The record player has a wonky lower half and I’m going to have to get creative with my method of attachment.
The most important thing to me with this project is that I want the final build to be strong and sturdy. I don’t want to build something that only works once or twice an then sits collecting dust. I would like to be able to pull this out a year from now and have it work just the same.

Can I make a suggestion? You wrote earlier that you wanted something you could collapse. Instead of making a new table for the harmonograph, why not make two pendulum arms that clamp to an existing table. I wasn’t sure if you were replacing the third dual-axis completely with the record player, or adding it on top of the dual axis pendulum. It sounds like you are adding it on top. If you were replacing it, you wouldn’t need anything to go through the table top. If you are adding it on top, maybe you could make something that clamps on the corner of the table. or over one edge.
That’s definitely a good idea but I think I still prefer to make my own table. One reason is the heaviness of the record player. It’s funny because I have this other record player which is made of plastic and would probably work even better but then I’d still be left with this old record player. I think the goal is to use this heavier record player. In the end, if I also build the table I can guarantee it will work correctly wherever I take it and I won’t have to worry about accidentally damaging someone else’s table.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I have a folding card table that i was gonna toss… you can use the metal legs and replace the top part with playwood
Thanks Dtez, I may have a look at your table. Maybe call you this weekend?
