Day 340 / Auditory Visuals

February 9th, 2011

Today was a day back at the office.  It was nice to be back.  I spent most of my time organizing tapes.  I got home at my normal time for once.  I was home before June was off to bed.  It was nice because it seemed like Junie was older all of a sudden.  She was talking up a storm and running around the house like crazy.  After she was off to bed Jenny and I lied on the sofa for awhile ignored some television.

After she was off to bed I went into my studio.  I had picked up the correct size bolt to mount my camera to the animation stand so I could finally start that dry-erase project I had in mind the past couple of nights.

A long time ago a friend and fellow Monome artist, Kevin (aka Soundcyst on the monome forums)  shared with me some audio files of his.  They were mostly noise based tracks consisting of dissonant guitar sounds.  He had seen a previous dry-erase experiment I’d done before and thought it would be cool if I used the same technique to create visual representations of the sounds in his tracks.  I was completely down for it because dry-erase animation actually moves faster and is sometimes very rewarding when your making it up freeform on the spot.

Like I said the guitar sounds are dissonant so I heard a lot of destruction.  I made the animation process progressively harder on me because I decided to animate dirt and earth exploding and crumbling.  The more it crumbled, the more pieces I had to mentally keep track of.

It was a great exercise in juggling multiple things in motion.  As a result, I only got about 5 seconds worth of animation done.  Even though it’s a rather raw and messy animation I’m pretty happy with what I made.
