I spent most of Saturday morning preparing my previous creative days for posting to the blog. I was pretty backed up. The last five days have been non-stop busy for me and I haven’t had even a moment to spend writing or organizing my posts.
Unfortunately, I had to be in Burbank by noon in order to film a short thing on The Muppets set. After that I went to the office to edit the stuff that I shot. I got back into Fullerton around 4pm.
Jenny was at my parents house with June so I drove there instead. We stayed for dinner and got home around 8. I went back to writing and organizing my previous days posts. I finished writing all of them at 11 or so and it was time to get started on todays creative thing.
I was pretty tired and didn’t have much energy. I decided to do a project that I’d been thinking about for a while. You see, a long time ago I bought a bandsaw for the very purpose of making small things like the wooden gears you see above, but my garage has been such a mess that the space for the bandsaw is not ready yet. It’s a big undertaking, my garage.
Anyways, for christmas, I got a Dremel Multi-max and I love it. It’s such a handy tool. I have been thinking that it might work well for making wooden gears in the meantime while my bandsaw is unavailable.
Online there is this tool called the Gear Template Generator. You can select all the parameters you would like for your gear and even test it out against another gear. Once you have the gear you want you can print out the template on paper. I printed these guys a long time ago, around the time I bought the bandsaw.
So, tonight I glued them to a piece of wood and brought all my supplies into the studio. The Multi-Max worked all right but it was still quite a challenge to hold it steady. The teeth on the printout have a bit of a bevel which I found nearly impossible to cut correctly. I decided to disregard the bevel altogether and instead cut across them.
The final gears came out a bit messy. I wasn’t able to test them to make sure that they worked but by just turning them in my hands they seemed like they might.
