Day 329 / Tabletop Turns

January 29th, 2011

Today was the first day of four consecutive days on set.  I have to apologize for posting late again but I’m getting home with just barely enough time to do something creative let alone post them.  Organizing the photos and writing these posts can sometimes take longer than the actual creative project.

Anyways, today was a nice busy day on set.  At the end of the day before leaving I had a nice conversation with one of the puppeteers that left me feeling particularly inspired.  I felt like doing something interesting tonight.

I thought, I should go out and film something.  Find a location with some really cool movement for future slitscan treatment.  When I got home and unlocked the door I came into a very quiet and dark house.  The silence was a reminder that even though I may have a bright idea it may not always be appropriate.

I work so much and with this blog Jenny and I don’t get to spend nearly as much time with each other as we’d like to.  Even though she was already in bed it didn’t seem right for me to leave and go out filming.

So I re-thought my plan.  I looked around the house and realized there’s plenty around here that I could film.  On the very first day I did a slitscan experiment way back on Day 100 I put some objects on a lazy susan and tried rotating it by hand.  The problem was I couldn’t rotate it in a constant fashion so the slitscans all turned out extremely wavy.

This time I pulled out the little DC motor off of my Harmonograph table and held it against the side of my lazy susan.  It took some trial and error because the attachment on the end of my motor has never quite fit tightly.  I had planned on doing a drill and tap to it for a creative project but I never got around to it.  So, tonight I improvised by stuffing a needle in the shaft to tighten it up.

The results were that I captured some pretty slow and smooth rotation.  Perfect for some nice looking slitscans

Back on day 100 I used the monome as my subject for rotation.  Tonight, since I finally had smooth movement, I decided to reprise the monome as a subject matter. I also used this cool designer bowl that I bought a long time ago from ikea with some unknown creative project in mind.  Anyways, I’m looking forward to seeing my final shots.
