Day 264 / My Friends And Their Eyes

Happy Thanksgiving!  The weather was beautiful.  The beach weather was blowing through for most of the day.  I spent the majority of it continuing my work in the garage as well as the studio.  I also got to spend some nice time with June.

Jenny and I at a large Thanksgiving dinner with family and then afterwards attended my friend Colleen’s Annual Post-Thanksgiving Trauma Center.  It was great fun.  We all played a rousing game of movie charades.

At some point in the night I set my camera up in the bedroom and informed everyone that if they were willing I was interested in filming their eyeballs.  I have been wanting to do this project for awhile and I’d been hoping for a day where many of my friends would all be together in the same place.  This get together proved to be the perfect night.

I was happy by the amount of friends who were willing to go through the torture of getting their eyes on film.  It was a very uncomfortable process.

First off I’m pressing my tripod up against them and a friend is pointing a bright flashlight directly into their eyeball.  It was really tough to capture the shots.  The light needed to be bright and the both of us had to be as still as possible.  The eye has a tendency to move rather erratically and it was a real challenge to capture steady, smooth shots.

In the end I got some good stuff.  It was a trip to see what an eyeball really looks like that close.  One interesting thing I noticed was that the people with brown eyes came out more intriguing than the bright colorful ones because the brown tone really accentuated the topography of the iris.

The final video is still being edited and will show up on the next post.
