Slowly but surely the construction of the Harmonograph continues.
Sunday was a busy day watching after june. I didn’t get started on my creative thing until around 10pm at night. I did the work in my parents garage because my dad has all the good tools and I’m able to work later into the night without disturbing anyone.
It took me awhile to complete but what I did was add the edging to the two halves that will be my table-top for the Harmonograph. I’m still a little worried that it won’t be sturdy enough to handle all the weight but I’m sure will find out soon enough. I have to wait 24 hours for the glue to completely set.
I will most likely add the hinge to it tonight but I won’t consider it my creative thing for the day. I imagine I will be working on this project all week but won’t be posting on it everyday. Sometimes the progress made will just be too small to be considered a really creative thing.
I imagine that once I get the legs on this guy the rest of the work will move quite quickly. I hope to be showing off some artwork created by this guy by either Saturday or Sunday next week.

Very keen to see this all come together! I hacked together a cheap and dirty harmonograph for the kids in our garage a few months ago. I think I put it on the blog back in May. It did the job, but I would love to build a proper one one day. Our garage is crammed full of nearly built cnc machine at the moment though, so it’ll wait. In the mean time I will enjoy building one vicariously through your blog ;)
This is going to be so cool! I’ve shared your idea with a colleague and we are both thinking about how this application could and would work with the under 9 year olds we work with every day. Once again, so inspired!

Can you add, or am I just missing, a search field?
I am truly wanting to learn more about composing music, period, but specifically for the music box and wanted to read what other stuff you have….okay, I was being lazy, but a search mar might help.

Charlie,
Sorry to send you three comments. I’m desperately trying to figure out the app you used to program your music for your music box. I’m a total newbie. Can you direct me to a good start spot for Tintinnabulome?
I plan on adding categories to my site but not sure how to add a search bar. I may look into it though.
Regarding Tintinn, Have you tried this quickstart? (http://docs.monome.org/doku.php?id=app:tintinnabulome)
Do you have a monome? You may be able to get it to work without a monome by assigning the midi outs to be the same is the midi ins on your DAW software and clicking the “Hold” checkboxes in TinnTinn.
The way I did it was I sent the midi out of TinnTinn into Ableton. Then I transcribed, just visually, from ableton to the music punch cards.
Craig,
I hate to say it, but you just spoke a language I only wish I could understand! No monome yet, however, I’m looking very lustily at the bliptone and the conversion kit. I’m handy and would be willing to try it; would you recommend it for a complete newbie? I will give your instructions a try though; I did just buy a music box for myself (can’t wait for it to come) and then also discovered this:

and then this too:
http://p22.com/musicfont/
Give them a try. I found them both exceedingly pleasurable. I am going to try to create various compositions in P22 and then loop and try to layer them in garageband or soundtrack.

Charlie,
Looks like it is only a windows format program, no?
That would explain my difficulty opening it.
Any other suggestions?

Wow, that P22 app is pretty awesome! Sorry, it’s not so easy to get going. It’s definitely cross platform. You have to download this application (http://www.dontcrack.com/freeware/downloads.php/id/3140/software/Max-MSP-runtime/) It’s called Max/MSP Runtime. Try downloading the latest version. Most of the monome apps have been programmed using Max 5 (www.cycling74.com) Hope this helps. Good luck!
Thanks Lindsay, I have to say your blog is pretty awesome! I love your creativity. I’m excited for when June gets closer to your daughters age and I inspire her to be creative. Love the palsticine stamp post. If it’s all right I’d love to add a link to your page in my links page.
Sure thing. I’ve been meaning to make a list of links to go on Filth Wizardry too. Glad you are enjoying our nonsense :) I bet June is in for some serious creative fun soon! As soon as she brings her own creativity to the table you’ll never be short of inspiration!
