Day 185 / Day and Night, Side By Side

More slit-scan fun while I’ve been working some heavier hours at the office.  This is an idea that has been sitting in my brain for some time.  The idea was to do a week-long time lapse from a single camera position and then put it through the slit-scan treatment.  What you get is day and night living together in the same frame.

Unfortunately, I haven’t done a week long time lapse so I searched the net.  I came across a fair amount of 24-hour time lapses on vimeo and settled on downloading this one from vimeo user ToastyKen.  I brought the timelapse into final cut and looped it over and over again.  I played with changing the speed and making them faster so that after the slit-scan you would have multiple 24 hour periods all together on the screen at the same time.

For the most part I love the way they’ve turned out and when I do my own time lapse I can play with the interval to get a smoother transition between day and night.  Because dawn and dusk only really last an hour each day they don’t take up much screen space.  Still, I love the concept.

I decided against rendering a bunch of examples because these images give me a clear idea of what to expect, but I did send two of them through the render mill.

Enjoy!
