It got a bit late last night and I couldn’t get myself to work on the Imaginary Modular idea. I think it’s because I have to start thinking about the big picture rather than just the components now. So, I sat there watching TV with Jenny coming up with things I could do.
Jenny and I DVR the show Project Runway and after the end of the show there is always the leftover first five minutes of the next program. Directly following Project Runway is this weird show called “On The Road with Austin and Santino”. Everytime it comes on I get confused with thoughts like, “What IS this show?” and “Who IS that guy?”.
It’s basically two designers, one flamboyantly gay one and one sort of New Jersey trying-to-be-tough-guy-but-really-can’t-because-he’s-partnered-with-this-guy guy, go to some middle american persons home and give them some kind of makeover.
The flamboyantly gay one is Austin and it’s not that he’s flamboyantly gay that cracks me up, it’s just the faces he makes, especially in his interview setups. I bet the editors of this show have a lot of laughs at the hilarious freeze frames that grace their monitors so often. The drawing I did is a freeze frame from one of those interview setups. Within a four second piece of interview footage I was able to pull tons of funny faces. I had to be pretty selective and ultimately it was really tough to decide which one to draw.
Anyways, here is the drawing I did. I don’t really feel like I was able to capture that special something that makes his face really so funny to me. He kind of just looks like a surprised guy. Oh well. I don’t know which one I like better, with the rays behind him or without. I think the one without the rays may be funnier but I also like with.

I think he would like to be seen with rays, jaja…Funny post and weird program you have in the USA, well like a lots in Spain, jaja…
love Project Runaway (in the same way I love greasy fries). More inkscape? addictive.
So I think the drawing is fantastic, but maybe what is lacking is the fact that in the actual screen capture Austin’s face is all pastel-y… I mean, his make-up and coloration is what adds to his interesting/oddness… no?
Your absolutely right Lisa. The hard edged look of my drawing is on the complete other side of the spectrum than his soft make up and lighting. I am also noticing in the frame grab he’s got a little bit of a corner smile that doesn’t appear to be in my drawing. That’s a small detail that would probably make a big difference.
i HEART austin, always have. any person who can be that awkward, self-consciously unique is just tops with me. Plus his stuff on season one RULED and i friggin’ am STILL not over Wendy Pepper. U.G.H.
Haha! I love that this post is outing all the Project Runway fans. I did not see the first season so I didn’t know that Austin was on but Jenny has informed me. I started watching halfway through the Christian Siriano season. I thought it was just another dumb “America’s Best _______” show but after watching it I was really impressed with what the designers have to pull off. And the judging is quite fun to watch especially to see if you agree with them or not.
little bit of Project Runway trivia. I used to play in a band with one of the past winners (Jeff Sabelia). He never struck me as a fashion guy (always had on Dickies and a dirty t-shirt). Word on the street here is that he had a smart phone stashed, and designer friends would email him ideas and designs. Truth? who knows. he was a great bass player though.
