This was waaaayyyyy harder than I thought it was going to be. Driving home from work I thought to myself about my post from “Day 067 / Drama In The Kitchen” and how it would be cool to do another version of that.
The inspiration for that original post was from my buddy Dean. He sent me a link to an artist named Terry Border who photographs household items in human situations and I thought “hmm, that seems easy enough.” Well, back then I didn’t take it nearly to the extent that he does, giving the food arms and legs and adding them into sets with props and everything.
So, this evening I decided to take it to that level. I’m definitely happy with the results but man, it was not easy at all. The hardest part was figuring out how to get these guys to stand up on their own. The bow and arrow, as well, was a particularly unique challenge. I did take the final step of photoshopping out the pencil sticking out of the back of the banana in order to create the illusion that he’s standing on his own.
One other fun thing that I got to practice on this one was lighting the scene with my flash. I turned off all the lights and held the shutter open while I flashed the scene from a couple of different angles. It was pretty fun to experiment with different lighting positions quickly and with ease.
I have to show my kids this, because a while back we had fun gluing goggly eyes onto the contents of our fruit bowl and it ended in a bit of a masacre.

They will get as much of a kick out of your photo as I have. Maybe it will inspire them to want to make their own kitchen drama scenes :)
WOW! I loooooove them! Hilarious, perfect expressions on their fruity faces.
haha, brilliant. great detail on the fruits too! i especially like mr. appleman’s teeth.
Thanks guys. I think this post just might be my favorite one so far now. I enjoy looking back on this one.
