So last night was such an epic project I decided to go for something a little less involved. The story goes that from the age of six to somewhere around sophomore year in high school I had the impression that I was going to be an animator when I grew up. That was, until I got my hands on a video camera and I came to the conclusion that I could get the same kind of satisfaction in filmmaking that I was searching for in animation except without all the repetitive labor.
So, this afternoon I bought myself a new sketchbook. It’s the first one since my high school days. The truth is, I’m not that skilled of an artist. I can’t really draw hands or realistic bodies. I practiced a drawing style after my favorite cartoon director, Chuck Jones. When I was younger, drawing was a popular way to pass the time in my room at nights. At some point I’ve lost that spirit but would like to get it back. It’s an incredibly peaceful thing to be zoomed into a piece of paper for the evening.
In other news, yesterday my blog got posted on the MAKEZINE blog so I may suddenly have more traffic on these pages. If you’re new to the site and this is your first visit, welcome. Be sure to check out the “Year So Far” link. It’s only been 33 days but its already been a very interesting and satisfying experience for me. It gives me the feeling that over the course of this year I may be doing some things that I would’ve never expected to be doing. Anyways, all the best and thanks for checking out the site.

The sketches are awesome! I wouldn’t worry too much about the details, like hands and things, since your style is pretty well established. You may have a different perspective (pun alert!) but from here it’s easy to see you have a lot of potential avenues to explore! Keep up the good work and continued good luck with your fight with the dreaded ‘butt’! I have been off em for about 10 years and I am glad to hear of your success, too.
Wow, thanks Wicker. Welcome to the blog :)
Dude! Your drawings are very Chuck Jones-esque! I can totally see it, especially in the drawing of the man with the pipe! Tom & Jerry is my favorite cartoon of all time and I especially enjoy the era of cartoons he produced!
Awesome, Thanks Eric! Yeah, I loved disney animation as a kid but as I grew older I refined my tastes a little and made a conscious decision to like Warner Bros. style just a bit more. Chuck Jones and Tex Avery, those two are the best in my opinion. We should talk animation sometime. Thanks for checking in!
nice sketches!
i also like the pictures! what camera do you use?
Thanks nicholay. The camera is the Canon 7D but the reason the pics look so good is due to the lens which is a Contax Zeiss 35-70 3.4 which has a beautiful macro mode. I’m using a contax to eos adaptor to use it.
Thanks
I totally feel for that guy with the woman… great expressions, especially the subtle sneer from the woman.
