As I drove home the usual thought of “what am I going to do for my creative thing?” ran through my head.
The initial idea was to work on my Harmonograph table which I started a whole two weeks ago. The main thing that changed my mind was the amount of work I’d been doing at the office and the lack of time I’d spent with Jenny. So, I decided to do something that I could do on the floor next to Jenny as we watch thursday night television.
It’s also Project Runway night as well and both of us have a small obsession with that show. It’s amazing what those designers pull off in such a short amount of time. I felt oddly connected to them working on my project as I watched them work on theirs. Luckily, I don’t have a smart and cutting group of judges critiquing my stuff. I’m sure they’d have nothing nice to say about this unfinished collage I did.
I think I was a little too ambitious with my idea. I am trying to recreate the famous frame from the film Pulp Fiction with John Travolta and Sam Jackson holding up their guns. First, I drew the image on paper, then I searched our magazine collection for textures and images. Jenny had thrown out all of her fashion magazines so I was pulling from Home and Garden magazines like Readymade and Domino and my magazines consisting of MAKE and Sound on Sound.
Surprisingly, I found it very hard to find black skin in these pages. Sound on Sound had the most but even there it was slim pickings. You never realize how white centric most of the magazines are around you until you have to go searching for black skin. Instead, I opted for a brown rug that I found in one of the home magazines. In fairness, I had to go with a white rug for Travolta’s character.
Eventually, it just got too late and I had to chalk this one up to being an unfinished work. I think when I get back to finishing this it could be quite cool with the right kind of detailing.
