Posting late again. Sorry about that. I’ll have to remedy that one tonight. Jenny and I went with our friends Jeff and Wendy to see Flight of the Conchords play at the hollywood bowl last night. It was mind-blowingly awesome! Even though it seems like every seat in the Hollywood bowl is just too far away. I love their comedy but seeing them live made all the difference. My throat is still hoarse from all the laughing out loud. It also made me miss my friends from the old N. Zed. Friends I’d gotten close to while working on a film out there but haven’t seen in a long time.
Anyways, I got home real late last night but I knew, as I was driving home, that I was going to play with Berna. Berna is this really rare application that emulates a 1950’s electronic music studio. It’s based on the methods used in the early days of sound synthesis to make musique concrete. You have 4 reel to reel tape recorders in the upper right hand corner that you can route anything to. You record loops and play with playback speed all the while sending it through vintage radiophonic-style filters. It sounds amazing and last night I really had to stop myself or else I would’ve been up all night messing around with it. Check out the video below. Also, to get a better idea of what kind of studio this software bases itself on as well as witness the epitome of the term “Synth Babe” check out this video.
In the video below you will see a little jam I performed based on an interview I did with my pal Justin on Day 003 of this blog. As you’ll hear in the video Justin suffers from this disease called CRPS (Chronic regional Pain Syndrome) or RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). It used to be called RSD and was changed eventually to CRPS but many still refer to it as RSD. Anyways, it’s a horrible nerve disease that there currently is no cure for and can only be treated through the use of pain medication. One of the strangest aspects of this disease is that it can be caused by only minor injuries, even just landing on your feet badly, (read the article linked below). It’s a sad story and if you haven’t already, check out Day 003 and listen to my interview with him. While your at it check out his current 365 day project of polaroids that he takes of himself daily. It’s actually beautifully written as well as photographed and I think it deserves some larger kind of appreciation or even publication perhaps.
Also, please learn more about RSD/CRPS because the more people research the better the treatment and the longer my buddy can partake of the latest technologies. Click here to read a very good article on the disease and what can happen to people suffering from it.
By the way, if your speaker system doesn’t have much bass response then I really recommend the use of headphones. It will sound loads better. I apologize in advance for the jerky mouse movements.
Okay enough! Now, enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole hole hole hole…

Wow. I really liked this style of jam. It turned out interesting.
Definitely like how the application is designed too, it seems to fit a certain feel of older audio. I think I’ll get this, I’ll probably need it for a film at some point.
Thanks for keeping this up. I read this daily and enjoy it all. I’m totally behind you as you try to quit smoking. Be strong.
I’ve looked a couple dozen pages so far. In themselves they document a variety of thoughtful and creative projects. The fact that you’re keeping this up on a schedule, on top of a heavy job, moreover, is an inspiration to us all to do a bit more and get a bit more out there.
Wow. Thanks for that. It was tough getting through some of those days. I had to have those fallback projects sometimes, like simply drawing. It’s easy to forget that even the small stuff can be considered creative.
