Day 352 / Big Bubble Fail

February 21st, 2011

Another bulk posting.  Sorry again.  I’m getting close to the end of this experience and my ambition to post these everyday has all but completely waned.  “Aw, I’ll post them at the end of the weekend.”  I think it was the same last weekend too.

Today’s creative project was to test out the giant bubble making device that I put together on Day 343.  I was hoping to create giant bubbles with it but instead I found it almost impossible to even create a sheet of bubble with it.  Jenny snapped some pictures while I tried using it and amazingly she captured one of the very few times a bubble actually formed.  The picture above is probably the best of the day, I’m sorry to say.

While we were there I suspected the problem was with my bubble mix.  But after I got home I tested the mix out with my first bubble-wand and it performed beautifully.  So, I’ve come to the conclusion that the problem was with the rope that I’m using and perhaps the way that I had it tied to the fishing poles.  The rope that isn’t working so well is a thick and heavy cotton rope.  I thought initially that the thicker the better since it might absorb more and extend the life of the bubble.  I turns out that the thinner rope seems to work better.

I found some rope in the garage more like the kind I have on my other bubble-wand.  I tied it onto  the fishing pole with regular knots this time so that the rope would create a V-shape at the connection point.  I tested it out quickly in my backyard and sure enough I was able to create multiple bubble sheets.  There was no wind to coerce the bubble out but I felt better to have improved the design a bit.

Hopefully, before this blog ends, I will succeed in creating whale-sized bubbles.
