This saturday I worked on set as well.  It was at the same location as yesterday.  It’s a pretty amazing place.  It’s called Greystone Mansion and it was built by an oil tycoon.  I found the story behind the place very interesting.  I wish I could share details from my experiences on set but I could easily get myself in trouble if I say too much.  The location is not such a big deal too mention because tons of films have been shot there including Ghostbusters, The Big Lebowski and There Will Be Blood.  It has been so far the most beautiful set of the film.

I got home and had no idea what I was going to do, as usual.  Lately, I’ve been having trouble getting inspired.  This particular evening was a struggle.  I actually started two separate projects before this one and dropped them in the middle because they were not turning out well.

The first idea was to do a little flip-book animation with a post-it note stack but eventually it became too much to concentrate on.  Then I decided to do a cinema 4D tutorial on modeling a mountaintop but the tutorial was old.  Many of the suggestions were dated and worked differently in my version of the software, so it was not going anywhere.  At around midnight, I decided to do this book compartment idea.

I’d remembered this tutorial on the MAKE blog which describes the process using a dremel Multi-max.  I so want one of these tools.  Anyways, I gathered up my regular dremel, found a book I didn’t mind destroying and headed over to my parents garage.  I was lucky because they were away visiting my sister up north so I didn’t have to worry about going into the garage and making a bunch of noise.

I pretty much followed the same instructions as in the tutorial except I used a regular cutting blade with my dremel.  I deepened the cuts with a utility knife and spread Elmer’s glue along the edge with my finger.

I think it looks kind of cool.  It’s a silly way to transport your art supplies but kind of stylish nonetheless.

I tried to do this to carry my Speak and Spell when I was a kid, so I could be like Penny from Inspector Gadget with her little computer-in-a-book :)

That’s an awesome idea! Would have to be a pretty large book but a speak and spell is the perfect look-a-like to Penny’s book.
