Thanks for the tip Dean. Charcoal is an interesting medium. I kind of love/hate it. I think once I get a better handle on it I could grow to love it. There is definitely more of a solid technique to it rather than an experimental medium. All the way down to which type of charcoal should go down first and which type last.

Cool! For positioning I just kind of eyeballed it. Of course, you want to make sure that the left-eye photo is directly across from it’s companion right-eye photo on the disc that each is oriented the same. But when it came to how I glued each photo down I just tried to keep it as centered as possible. I have to believe that as long as they are close to centered over the window your eyes will be able to do the rest of the work to combine them into a 3D image.

Definitely tedious! This one wasn’t too bad but tonights drawing was much more trying, (check the next day). I bet some people have it down to a figure drawing level. I can see how it could come more naturally after enough practice.

Hi Sushi John. I know I have left this place stagnate for far too long. I have had many a’ drive home from work telling myself to simply update the “about” page so that at least it would seem current. After this post, I got pretty busy at work and after the big rush I never got back to posting. I still have plans to update this site and perhaps because of your reminder I will do so soon. In more recent news, I have spent the last 6 months or so delving deeper into my app 64(video)fingers. This has been the most interesting and creatively satisfying work as of late. I have also been pulling video clips from far and wide to put together a live performance.

Thanks for stopping by and reminding me that this place exists. I need to pay more attention to it.

Bummer. I can’t seem to get them to really sync up consistently. Even with the “sec. delay” setting it seems to be impossible to get a good sync from it. Still, it’s a very cool thing to know about.

There is a way to get around the problem of getting the song to play at the right time. Have a look here:

It lets you put two youtube sites on at the same time.
Just sync up the times of the song to your video and you are good to go!

yeah, i’ve hinted doing ninjam stuff to you and jared before. the software is really nice. on the receiving side, you can redirect the audio via rewire/soundflower/jack(osx) to whatever daw you want to use. each audio stream gets its own pair(s) of ports. same for the “send” side; it should be pretty easy to put everything on a master stereo pair and push that out over the network.

as far as latency goes, ninjam compensates for lag/delay/latency by treating it as “rests.” you setup the bpm/tempo in ninjam, and then any network dropouts are treated as part of the steady rhythm, as rests, with the music returning right on the next beat. i never really hear even 1-bar rests, despite playing with folks all over the world simultaneously. hit up jam.monome.org to see about setup instructions — you may have to hop onto #monome on irc.freenode.net to get the server address and password, or just email rud. try it out sometime; get in on a jam session.

@Jared, Don’t mention it. It’s been a delight to do these things. My friends enjoy it as well so it’s something we look forward to.

@Pirx, That’s an AWESOME idea. I am totally down to try that out. We would have to coordinate sometime before to make sure that the setup can work. It would be awesome to hear things coming out the speakers that we never made but we know someone out there did. The only thing I have to figure out set-up wise is a way to give you all the instruments while not monitoring them live because of the feedback issues with the mics. But I think it’s doable!

been thinking about the audio equivalent of slitscanning. i bet some automated arc knob twirling/range-selecting would be a start. press to start select, twiddle, press again to finish selection and store it someplace. then start scanning that set range back and forth, automated to make it easier/duplicated-a-bunch, over your audio source. so… not quite like mlr, but borrowing a couple of ideas from live sample chopping. or envelope/filter/fx-tweaking instead of samples. whichevah!

Thanks Nightmorph! That effect your describing is more or less simply slitscan thing. It’s especially noticeable when the wave crashes. The time it takes the wave to dissipate dictates how big the wave will look after the slitscan. Sorry, I diddn’t use your uploaded footage. I was going to use it at first but my work kept me so busy that at the end there I decided to keep it simple and stick to what was already rendered.

oh man. this is simply drenched in gorgeous textures and sounds. the band gets massive props for the audio.

but your visuals, man, your visuals: love ‘em. they tell a cohesive narrative, wrapping out and then back in. i love the way you did the selective pixel blur with the wave shots; that was excellent, as was the transition to the highway, and then later the left-panning sequences.

speaking of: where did you find all these clips? did you shoot ‘em all yourself? is there a place where one can find public domain or CC-licensed video clips? been thinking about doing more stuff for the video part of the mm-cc collabs, and to get into doing stuff for my own music, whether a studio-oriented workflow like this, or live chopups a la 64videofingers. now i need some raw material so i can start learning how it’s done.

it,s a beautifull effect.
The past year i saw here a lot of artifacts like this in spain, because all the TV passed from analogue to digital.Every day you can saw this crazy effect, and listen the nasty sounds from your TV.People is furious when the glitch effects appears ;)
I used a Datamosh module by VADE inside COGE to recreate this effects so i will check your videos recommendations because the result is impressive.

@Blair – Wow, thanks for checking in. What a trip that you did the visuals for Jared. I think I perused your videos back when jared posted his in/out video on uprlip. I remember checking out the Wobbulator video back then but it didn’t occur to me at the time to actually give it a shot. Now I’m very excited to play around with it. I will definitely post any progress here. I have a feeling, because I’m not an electronics engineer, that adding the extra yokes might be an intuitive process. At least I’ve got my fingers crossed that it is. Thanks again!

@MCD – I think you are just the guy to take this on. I’m sure you will make handy work of this one. I’d love to hear what you learn from the repair shop. I have a feeling that we may need to build a deflection yoke from scratch. The S-Curve yoke looks like a pretty big coil that wraps around the tube near the fattest part, by the screen. I bet they don’t sell anything like that. But after watching in the video how the s-curve yoke affects the image I can really visualize the movement of the electricity. I think the coil is up front so that the inductance affects the image less than if it were farther back. Twisting the combined pattern of the other two yokes rather creating the pattern altogether. Does that make sense? I have no clue how the other yokes work but the S-curve seems a little more visible.

Glad you were inspired by the video! The device had been sort of lost to the annals of video art history and I’m glad it’s getting a bit of a revival as the CRT starts to disappear. I was captivated by the device years ago and made two of my own modded tvs. I made the simplest version where i just hacked the x/y wires into an audio input to make the oscilloscope, but adding the extra yokes would be pretty sweet. The original device kept me occupied for days. Good luck with the mods..keep me posted

Yes, I will probably add a few extra yokes to it. Reading most of the tutorials you posted, they describe how to make TV based oscilloscopes, which make use of the already present Vertical and Horizontal movement. So to get those cool sweeps and s curves in your video, more yokes will be needed. Going to stop by a local TV repair shop next week and see what they have to say.

@Willem – Oh that’s a good idea. Take our digital pictures with our 2 7D’s but then re-capture those images with an analog camera and develop them as slides perhaps. I believe the developed negative (or positive slide) is still quite large for the viewmaster’s windows but perhaps, if when you snapped the original pictures, you backed up far enough away from your subject matter to make them the correct size for the cropped negative, it would work.

awesome! glad you’re getting your feet wet with arduino. the ^ mentioned Firmata is also really great for getting data into max/msp. http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Interfacing/MaxMSP Scroll down a bit on that page and you’ll see Arduino2Max, that’s the one you want. such a snap, just open it with your arduino board in, and firmata loaded on it… and poof you have data in max. can’t wait to see what you do with this.

This is a generic protocol which you can use to easily communicate between Pure Data and the Arduino.

@Everyone – Thanks for all the support guys! I’m sorry it has taken me so long to reply! I still have very little time even after the muppets. Turns out I’m shooting a bunch all this week for some other projects at work. I have to get my posts up but I’m using all my time. Still haven’t continued sifting through the pictures since this day and that has me a little worried. I’ve heard though that even with my large order it shouldn’t take too long to turn around.

@MC – That definitely is quite a drive. Although I imagine it’s a great place to live. It’s beautiful up there. I do appreciate the support and it will be great to meet you!

@Gu-dog – The exhibit should last for most of the month of March but is there something we should know? Are you coming back so soon? It would certainly be rad to see you “beau-frere”!

@ Stephanie – Thanks Steph! If I get everything I’m hoping for accomplished it should be a sensory overload so hopefully that will distract enough people. Haha! I hope you’re doing well out there! Getting some editing work?

@Cillian John – Thanks so much! I appreciate the vote of confidence. There are definitely days that I feel good about and I’m chalking it all up to experience so I don’t regret anything. There are ups and downs just like any year. I know that opening night I plan on walking around with the camera and filming everything so you should be able to get a feel for what it’s like at the show. I’ll do a drawing on the Harmonograph for you. Actually, I’ll probably do a few drawings for all of the people who have left supportive comments for me. Thanks again!

Man I hope one of your mates was video taping you and your blog process for the past year because no doubt it would make an awesome documentary!
Ending it all in a gallery is brilliant. And you totally deserve to be displaying this work. From following the blog for the past year I know you’re a modest guy but don’t sell yourself short. There are so many quality projects that you completed over the last year that can easily stand up as fascinating pieces of art in their own right (ignoring the fact that you did them after a days work!). To see all the projects documented in the gallery will be incredible. Unfortunately I won’t be able to be there in person, but i’ll be there in spirit (and I can check out the exhibition on your blog!). All the best. Cillian

Ha! Somehow over the years I have gotten used to getting 4 to 5 hours of sleep and being OK. I have always been a night owl but I think some of it comes from working in the movie business. It also depends on how I think the next day is going to be. If it’s going to be a nice day theb I’m not too worried about a little delirium. Although, I must admit, once the blog is over I am looking forward to sleeping quite a bit.

@Applyfilter, thanks man. I like looking through you’re blog. Lots of techniques I’ve never heard of. My slitscans are rendered with a proprietary software designed a person I found on vimeo. His name is Carl Rosendahl. Unfortunately, I was instructed not to distribute. Although, I was thinking of trying out a manual analog version using a DC motor which moves some black paper with a slit in it slowly across the lens.

@Jeff, hey dude! I don’t think so. I’m not exactly sure what I’ll do. I’m pretty sure I won’t do another year. I was planning on starting up my bizarro blog where I show one extremely uncreative and mundane thing-a-day. Haha.

@Jared, The puppeteers do rule. They know they’re character’s so well that it’s really like talking to the muppets and not a puppeteer playing them. The atmosphere on set, i must admit, has it’s ups and downs though. That’s all I’ll say.

@bite, I’m sure I would find your village of 7000 more pleasant than Los Angeles. I live on the outskirts of LA in the city of Fullerton. I would actually hate to live in LA. I hate driving there. You can’t turn left, or at least you have to wait until the street light turns yellow to finally turn. It’s cool to visit and maybe see a show but living there would no doubt be too much for me. San Francisco though, that’s a nice city to live in. Northern California as a whole is just a beautiful place to be.

@John, Yep eventually I had to keep the iris steady. I closed it down all the way to 22 and with the 1 sec exposure time it eventually blew out. No, not the smog, :)

Thanks man. I meant to add some splatter to this one as well but I got too tired. I get what your saying but I think this one is closest i’ve come to actually realizing what I meant to create. I think it still needs more shading and splatter. The two drops of black in there now are actual accidents.

Thanks guys! @bite, yes it’s a bit confusing if you’ve never done it before. The reason why you don’t see the body of the monome is because it’s much darker then the light of the led’s. Plus I never kept it in one place long enough for the led’s to expose the body. At the end of the shot I flashed a flash on the scene. That’s the only reason you can see the room. Without the flash, the picture would be the text over blackness.

I recommend experimenting!

@Mark – sorry about that. The reason you received three posts at once was probably because I posted them all at the same time. Sometimes (especially weekends) I have the tendency to post a couple of posts at the same time. Many times my creative project keeps me up until very late at night and I can’t get to posting it until the next day. Sometimes that happens multiple times and I post multiple days at once.

I also should’ve advertised the Crashspace talk much earlier but there was a point where I thought my work was going to conflict with it so I didn’t want to say anything to soon.

these are really great, and the tumblr link was rewarding. Something that helps these work is that they force one to notice the composition of a great movie shot, the thought that was put into framing a scene, which might ordinarily pass by without conscious thought.

Vertical turntables, as you wondered about, are actually a thing of reality, or at least they were. A number of companies made them. Most worked well at first but as they aged and parts came out of alignment they got harder to work with. If you have sufficient patience though, and if you keep an eye on craigslist or ebay, they can be found. Consider this one, for example:

Technics mad a number of different vertical models, the SL-6 and the SL-7 are the models that come to mind, but I know there were others. A few companies also made recordplayers suspended in such a fashion that they had a tonearm on both sides of the record so that you could play both sides of the record without flipping it. There was a lot of ingenuity in the turntable design world, that’s for certain!

If you’re looking for interesting turntables to do projects with, there are two main types of turntables, belt-drive and direct drive. The direct drive turntables use a motor/bearing assembly that relies on magnetic induction to spin the turntable, no belt to wear out and quartz crystal controlled speed. By varying certain parameters, you can control the drive speed and very precisely control the platter rotation. If you were to adapt such a mechanism with an addressable control module, you could use a computer to control the turntable, vary the speed, etc… the possibilities are endless. Have fun!

It’s been years since my last photo class. The big argument with digital I saw back then (besides the art of using a traditional camera) was in the end use. We live in a day where we share our daily photos digitally and apps like hipstamatic encourage more people to snap photos whom otherwise might not have. The biggest tragedy is the lack of versatility — without a negative an awesome photo taken on you phone will never make amazing gigantic prints.

haha! I love the idea of a band that gets up and presses “Demo” on their synths. I once went to a live show where the band sound checked for 20-30 minutes. My friend and I imagined the band was already playing and it just happened to sound like a sound-check. “Thank you very much, This is a sound check off our last album!”

Anyways, in regards to the app. I think my title comes off a little more provacative than it really needs to be. Although, the relationship between technology and art always worries me a little. It’s like you have the first cheeseburger ever invented and it tastes mind-blowingly amazing and then you have the McDonalds cheeseburger which is spit out of a machine.

Yes, I was pretty happy with the results of this tear-down. I did get the VU meters in tact. I was mostly interested in the moving parts more than anything. Although, I have a bunch of old circuit boards from an old Sony mixer I tore down a while back. I haven’t done any desoldering or anything but I have this idea of following some of the projects in Craig Anderton’s book Electronics Projects for Musicians using mostly old components I can desolder off of these circuit boards. It would make for a rather long process but it might add a unique character to the sound of the pedal than if I purchased them all off the internet.

ive used retro camera for android – not as good as the hipstamtic, but i dont have an iphone. this is certainly something that comes up for technology users. i mean, midi and softsynths and DAWs – it all makes it easier. it takes out some of the steps. granted its not like pushing the “demo” button on casio and letting it roll, but good points to contemplate.

The Photos look really, really good! Thanks for the Hipstamatic-App tip also, had not heard about it, nor had i seen any of those pictures knowing they were made with an app on a cellphone. Too cool! There is an app for Android as well, called “Retro Camera”, which simulates several, well, retro cameras, one being the Hipstamatic. Haven’t had a chance to test it yet, but am really eager to do so.

I’ve torn down a lot of electronics, and am always disappointed by how little can generally be lifted from video tape decks :(
This looks pretty good though– the more professional (and older), the better! Did you get the VU meters out ok? Looks like some nice buttons and switches too…
